Stream-ing, an interactive installation about the interdependent relationship of people and the environment, was created by Drew Browning, Annette Barbier, and Jim Ferolo with students from Bradley University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The Illinois waterway from Chicago through Peoria, which includes the Chicago and Illinois rivers, is both the metaphor for interconnectedness and the subject of data collection in this interactive installation.
Installation participants traverse a 30 ft. long floor projection which immerses them in the life – and despoiling – of the river. They view the relationship of nature and industry through video clips prompted by stepping on sensitive areas of the projection. They observe the reaction of river flora and fauna to pollutants, and interact with life forms in the river. Data from Army Corps of Engineer and other sources form part of the visual and sound-scape. Depth data from the rivers is the basis for elevation-grid benches flanking the projected river and were created in Peoria’s Tri-City machine shop.
